Motorcycle or "motor" officers are usually assigned to traffic enforcement. A motorcycle is quicker and more maneuverable than a car, and able to catch up to and stop violators in heavy traffic. They're also more versatile for providing escorts for parades, funerals, VIP vehicles, etc. That said, they're popular because there is a mystique to them.
